Hope you had a great weekend. Were in serious waiting mode for this baby. We’ve tapped out on the fun of buying baby things/needing baby things so we are just laying low until little girl wants to meet the world. We still got in a few good workouts though! I was happy to do some barbell squats at the gym. Had been a while! I did several sets of pause squats at 95 lbs. Definitely a low squatting weight for me, but alas, I am 9 months pregnant, so I am happy with it.
We also did some boring chores like getting a new car battery, taking back some stuff to Target, and a big Walmart haul. We also de-shedded all the animals in the house. We’re so exciting.
I did get a new hair straightener though! It is an expense I hate to pay for, but I use it every day and depend on it to not have Medusa hair. If you are curious, I got a Croc.
My sister in law has one, and I’ve used it in the past and really liked it. It heats up to 450 degrees! I try not to use it that hot since I feel like it will fry my hair and giving me baby hairs. It heats up fast and gives me smooth, shiny hair! Got it at Ulta.
We also got some yummy Mexican food, tried a really good frozen pizza (hah, that pregnancy laziness), and made some homemade burgers on pretzel buns with some onion rings. So much health. NOT. But it was a weekend of good food!
I have some other good food finds to fill you in on this month’s July favs! Here goes.
Guys. I have found a new love. Josh and I are both obsessing with overnight oats. It gets so darn hot in the summer that my usual hot oats aren’t as appealing. Drinking hot coffee and eating a hot breakfast makes ya girl sweat. Now we have a cool, refreshing go to breakfast! If you don’t know, overnight oats is kind of whatever you want it to be as long as there are oats and liquid involved. You basically throw together oats and whatever toppings you want in a jar (we like to use a mason jar..channeling Pinterest), stick it in the fridge overnight, and you wake up to a glorious mush of oat goodness. I am loving this so much that I thought I’d share the recipe that we personally like. Quaker has some that just came out that I highly recommend if you want to try it out first to see if you can handle the texture. We love the Blueberry Banana and Vanilla Bliss.
We modeled our recipe after this. Here is what we do!
*Blueberry Banana Overnight Oats Recipe*
1 cup oats (we like a mix of steel cut and rolled oats..if you want to pick one go with the rolled)
2 tsps chia seeds (this is a great binder for the mix..it forms a gel like consistency that helps bind everything together)
2 tsps vanilla
1/2-1 cup blueberries (add as many as you like..we found a cup was too many but 1/2 to 3/4 cup was perfect)
1 cup milk of your choice (we use skim but you can always go with almond or cashew milk for non dairy options)
Sprinkle of sweetener (I use Splenda..for Splenda haters go with regular sugar, honey, maple syrup..)
*Put oats in bottom of a mason jar. Add in chia seeds. Mix. Add cup up banana and blueberries. Mix. Add vanilla, sweetener, and milk. Stir to combine. Cover and put in the refrigerator overnight. You will have breakfast ready to go!
Ok back to my July favorites:
I’ve seen a couple of these restaurants around time but we never had tried it. We recently went and it is very tasty! It is like a Chipotle but with pizza. You pick your crust type, sauce, and all your toppings. They assemble your pizza while you watch and then put it in a big ole oven and bring it to you when it is done. They are all personal sized pizzas. We really enjoyed it
! I got an Italian Sausage and Mushroom pizza, and Josh got a “White” pizza. My sausage was a little spicy but I still liked it. I had a tiny bit of food envy when I tasted Josh’s. Might get that next time!
Simple Turkey, Cheese, Spinach Sandwiches
Well this is totally unexciting, but my favorite lunch as of late is a simple turkey sandwich. I am loving the Nature’s Own Whitewheat bread. Only 110 calories for two slices!
It is a white bread but with whole grains and a lot of healthy stuff. I feel better about eating this than straight up Wonder bread but I don’t love wheat..a good compromise! On the bread (which I usually toast) I add a slice of Velveeta cheese (only 40 calories a slice..one of the lowest I can find on the market), some spinach, turkey, and some dijion mustard. This makes for a healthy, delicious, protein and veggie filled lunch. Love it!
The Great British Baking Show
Have you seen this show on PBS yet? I don’t know why I find it so calming to watch. Maybe it is the British accents?
It is like you basic cooking competition but set in a tent in some pretty field in England I presume. The competitors have some pretty hard baking challenges. Since it is a British show, they do a lot of traditional English desserts. Breads, pastries, pies, cakes..you name it. Definitely leaves me wanting to eat sugar.
Did you ever listen to the Serial podcast? This one was made my some of the same American Life people. Though I can’t say I was as enthralled with this one as I was Serial, it is still a good mystery podcast that has the similar feel. It takes place in a small town in Alabama. A man named John B. McLemore sent an email to the show asking if they could send a reporter to investigate in an alleged murder that happened in the town. I won’t say much more as to not give anything away, but let’s just say the death that Brian ends up consumed with is not the death he originally went there for. This one has quite a bit of language so if you are sensitive to that it may be a no go for you but it is quite interesting!
In these hot months these are super handy! They are rubber like cooling towels that stay moist in their can. When you are ready to use it, wet it and it will stay cool and keep you cool for a long time. This was so good to have when I got overheated at the gym the other week.
Josh grabbed the frogg togg and came to the rescue! I put it around my neck and it really helped cool me off. I keep one on hand at all times now. If you play sports, run, or are outside for you job for a long period of time I really recommend these!
Oh boy..this was a binge show for us for sure. It premiered last fall on HBO. It is a complicated show that I’m still totally wrapping my head around, but it will hook you for sure. It is considered a science fiction western thriller. So yeah, it has a lot going on.
It is so complicated that I don’t really know how to give you a plot but I’ll try. You don’t know where it is set, but basically Westworld is a western themed theme park that android robots live in and play host to guests (real people) who pay thousands of dollars to come stay at the park and live out their fantasies without any repercussions. All the robots look and act just like real people with programmed lines but also capable of impromptu conversation. So confusing but so good. I listened to a podcast that broke down each episode after watching it. I like Decoding Westworld podcast. It helped me put everything together but be careful if you don’t like theories about what could be true. They tend to be right which in some ways kind of spoiled some of the big twists. Season 2 comes out next year!
Game of Thrones
Our other big show right now of course is Game of Thrones. It just premiered a couple weeks ago.
Only one more short season to go after this one so we are trying to soak it in! Just like with Westworld I have been enjoying listening to podcasts (specifically A Cast of Kings..the same people who have the Westworld podcast) break down each scene so I can drag out the season. So far lots of good action going on! We have already had one viewing party/ themed dinner party and hope to have another one soon!
I can’t believe we are headed into the month our baby is due! I kind of can’t wrap my head around the fact that I will have a child here really any day now. 21 days till my due date! Ahh! I hope to keep up with my regular blogging but there may be a pause for a few weeks while I adjust to my new life. But no worries, I’ll be back at it soon enough! And since I have no idea when she will make her debut, you can plan on the posts to keep coming for now!
