Though my world is mainly wrapped up in Laurel trying new foods, Momma wants to spice it up too. I recently went by the Vitamin Shoppe and Target and picked up some new snackage to try out.
I’m always attempting to find a food to tame my ravid sweet tooth. Lenny and Larry’s cookies usually do a pretty good job at this but if you didn’t know, they are under fire for claiming a false nutrition label.
I guess it was too good to be true. So they have since changed their recipe to be accurate so that the cookies actually have the macros they claim to have and a lot of people are not liking them. I think I can tell they seem drier and not as tasty but honestly, it was always a protein cookie to me and it still meets a need for me from time to time. One of the cookies and a cup of coffee ain’t so bad. So I’ll still give them a few of my money dollars every now and then. I tend to go for the Snickerdoodle and Pumpkin one if I can find it. The Double Chocolate one is good too. I never loved the Chocolate Chip one though.
I also tried Enlightened’s new Crispy Marsh Mallow Treats. I bought the Birthday Cake and the Original. Of course I tore into that birthday cake first.
Just for your information, it has 270 calories, 3g fat, 50g carbohydrates, and 15g protein.
My first bite into it I wasn’t sure how I felt. I definitely tasted the protein. But the more I chewed on it, the more I liked it. It did have a birthday cake flavor, though light. I loved that it had sprinkles. Sprinkles make everything more fun. It was chewy and satisfying. I could see how some wouldn’t love the taste, but I personally didn’t mind it.
The Original was just the same texture and only a little bit difference of a taste to me. It really did taste similar to the Rice Krispie Treats we all know and love. Just with a little added protein flair.
I knew what to expect in taste and so I really enjoyed this too. At first I felt like the nutritionals weren’t impressive. 270 calories is a lot for a snack for me. But it does have 15g of protein which is pretty good. The Rice Krispie is pretty huge so it isn’t super surprising that the calories are high. I was just going to eat half of it at a time but that didn’t happen!
I also tried a new Think Thin product. You know I love some of their protein bars, specifically the limited edition Holiday Cinnamon. Not sure if I mentioned this before, but the one downside to Think Thin is they use chicory root fiber. Chicory root is found in a lot of bars that high in fiber. Fiber One bars always have it listed as an ingredient. Through trial and error I realized it is this ingredient that tears my stomach up. I can only eat something with it in it if I have nowhere to go the rest of the day if you know what I mean. Watch out. I so love the Think Thin bar though that I just deal with it.
The new Think Thin Protein Cakes intrigued me so much I could not pass them up.
To be honest, I didn’t even think they’d have the chicory root in them but I should have known better..they do. Meh.
The lady at Vitamin Shoppe said these are superb. I don’t agree. They were just ok. It comes with two decent sized “cake bite”. Two cake bites are 170 calories, 5 fat, 19 carb, and 12 protein. They had three flavors..chocolate, red velvet, and birthday cake. I went birthday cake, as I do. The bites are really pretty! There are glistening sprinkles on them. They are so cute.
But I gotta be honest, the fun stopped there. I am not digging these. I’m not sure I can totally put my finger on what I didn’t like but it just left a funky taste in my mouth. Wouldn’t recommend this flavor but I don’t think I’ll spend money on trying the other two. Think Thin has other protein bites that I have had that I preferred over these.
Next recent snack I’ve tried is the RX Bar. I’ve seen these floating around the social media’s for a while now but just didn’t ever try them. Honestly, the listing of the ingredients on the front though impressive, didn’t draw me in. But they were on sale at Target the other day and the hubby was interested in trying them too so we bought the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt. I had a bite of one and was not turned off but let Josh eat it all. Then we saw them while shopping again and I decided to try the Chocolate Peanut Butter. While starving in the car we broke into it and I loved it.
It is thick and makes you feel like you are really eating something. This is something I don’t usually find in bars. I’m always left wanting more. These actually make you feel full(er) than most bars. They are a little high in calories and fat 210 calories, 9 fat..actually now that I write that out it’s really not bad!) but you are getting more bang for your buck. They are really soft and get embedded in your teeth pretty easy so make sure you check yo teeth before going into work! I think I can really taste the dates. I haven’t had a lot of dates in my day (the edible ones..eh eh eh) but I think I like them! The think I appreciate the most about them is the few ingredients and the fact that they are all “real” foods. You won’t feel bad about eating egg whites, dates, almonds, cashews and dates!
Domestic me decided to try out the chia pudding craze. I had some chia seeds on hand from making my overnight oats. Chia seeds are full of all kinds of healthy things like omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, antioxidants, minerals etc.I looked up a recipe and went for it, not sure what I was getting myself into. It was simple. Just milk, chia seeds, honey or maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Throw it all in together and use a WHISK to stir it up. This is important. I did use a whisk the first time and it still wasn’t mixed well enough and the chia seeds all sank to the bottom of my mason jar. So I had to re-whisk it a few hours later when I realized it wasn’t doing anything. So whisk, whisk, whisk, really well, and then pop it in the freezer for at least a couple hours or overnight.
I’ll be the first one to tell you that it’s not pretty. Kind of looks like a lot of little bugs. But the taste was actually pretty pleasant. The crunchy yet soft texture was a little strange though. You can add all kinds of toppings but I just went for it plain. The vanilla and syrup added a nice sweet flavor. I have to admit I had several big spoonfuls but most of it is still in the fridge. I’m just not totally sure how I want to eat it!
That’s all the new snacks I have tried as of late! I know Quest has come out with some new protein cookies I’d like to try. I am not a fan of most of Quest’s products, but I’ll give any cookie a shot 🙂
